Having been inspired by work done by Mary Watts (wife of George Watts) in the Watts Mortuary Chapel in Compton in Surrey in the UK I wanted to do a painting to show the earths creatures and plants living in harmony, the celtic knot art is tradtionally a continuous line never ending like the circle of life and I wanted to show this in a tree. Hence the curling branches.
The Celts believed in nature and the connection between the earth and the life beyond and it’s thought that they believed that trees held the spirits of their ancestors.
The Celts saw the towering strength and longevity (oaks can live for over 300 years) of the oak tree as a symbol of nobility and endurance.
